The merge duplicate utility should automatically add some kind of a flag to records that are merged indicating that a) they were the subject of a merge and b) which was the source and which was the target. Very useful for historical purposes - especially when merging constituents also sets new "date last changed" for things like gifts and addresses, and trying to figure out why that happened is tricky unless you remember/figure out that you merged constituents.
