The contribution amount is now set at 10% with no opportunity to change it. This fee is well above the industry standard for merchant fees, no matter which type of card is used.
The messaging on this contribution toward merchant fees was changed without an announcement.
The box to contribute is now auto-checked, another change that was made without announcing it.
While I am sure we all appreciate the opportunity to mitigate merchant fees, Blackbaud has created a problem with this practice. By auto-checking this box, Blackbaud has substantially increased the probability that we, the NPOs, will have to refund 10% of the purchase to angry Members who may feel tricked into paying a fee they never intended to pay.
The argument could be made that the Member should read more carefully and uncheck the box themselves, but we all know that's not how the public operates.
Please empower the consumer to select how much they wish to contribute, AND uncheck the box immediately. Perhaps a drop-down with choices, starting at a more fair and reasonable 3.5%, would encourage people to donate willingly.
Please also communicate such changes in the future, and well in advance, so we are prepared from a customer service standpoint.
Thanks for considering it.
