Totally agree. I export a lot of stuff to Excel and have to rename the header row for every export so that people can understand what is in each column.
to repeat myself again - consistency is #1 in creating & maintaining a good database. Should be the same for developers as users. Make RE consistent throughout!
* Changing the headers once saves time & trouble.
* Conversely, could query exports please default to the last saved doc like Export does? So you dont have to type it every time. grrrr
I also agree that this would be excellent. Blackbaud is always trying to encourage us to use export instead of queries. Adding Labels would be an good way to help convince people.
It is possible for it to be a huge help in reviewing field criteria as well. If this were set up like query column headings, you'd be able to see why you renamed the field/column heading next to the field.
It'd also be amazing if it could label the headers with phone type, so I don't have to export an extra column in front of each phone type so I know whether this is a business or home phone. Such a waste of time to get it organized.
Better Yet, give us the ability to create custom headers for the fields that are linked to the data and allow us to select as an option in export or query. Why should I have to type in something everytime I run a query or export. This would be a big time saver for most of us.
For most of our mailings,Export is a critical function and I tend to use the same Exports again and again. I forward an exported Excel spreadsheet that includes various gift data. That way it's easier for the giving director to review the segments and make changes than if we used RE mail. So given this, it would ease the process to know what I'm looking at rather than have to jump back and forth between Excel and the RE Export function, relabeling...again and again. Also, my label names would be more consistent for the recipient's ease. Thank you!!
I love this idea....Renaming header rows is one task that is repeated for every export I conduct, and I conduct a LOT! of exports. It would make the export process more more efficient if I could name the headers, before they were exported, and only once for commonly run exports.
While I can read the headers easily enough, no one else in my organiztion can, and when formatting excel, shorter headings make for narrower columns which means less pages, and a more visually friendly final product for projects which need to be printed.

Yes, please. It is silly to have to rename the headers every single time we export. A serious waste of time.

I second Cynthia's comment.
Please make consistent and logical approach for Column headings like in Queries!

I have to change export column headings daily when I email export data to other departments.
Rachel - as a workaround have you considered recording a macro to automatically change them every day?
Jenn- If you send me your email I would be happy to chat with you!
All Blackbaud employee emails use the same format - so hers would be jenn.mercer@blackbaud.com (i believe jennifer.mercer@blackbaud.com works as well)

This would also be especially helpful when Export decides to re-order the output fields.
This would save a lot of time and make exports easier to understand for new users running exports I have built for them.
This is something I often wish for...it would save so much time!
I would LOVE this feature
I always have to rename columns after exporting so they are clear, especially phone fields. This would be incredibly useful!
