When executing the merge, you have to search for the 2 records involved. When you execute the search, the constituent ID # DOES show up.... look to the right of the City,State column. So, I don't really understand your post.
I think they mean in the final screen when you have the two names at the top and the fields to be merged below - the two names are often identical and although you always do your due dilligence and think you did everything right, that one extra bit of information (having the ID show next to each of the names) can help ease your mind before you hit "merge".
