Allow 'Name' field to be configured to allow format other than First Name Middle Initial Last Name

Please allow the 'Name" field to be configured to display a format other than First Name Middle Name Initial Last Name. For example, if the constituent's name is Jane (First Name) Elizabeth (Middle Name) Smith (Maiden Name) Doe (Last Name), the 'Name" field could be configured to allow the format of First Name Maiden Name Initial Last Name (e.g. Jane S. Doe) rather than displaying the format of First Name Middle Name Initial Last Name (e.g. Jane E. Doe).

It seems the 'Name" field, which is used in many places including the results displayed in a constituent search, when outputting the 'Name' field under 'Constituent Information' with queries or exports, or with how a constituent's name appears as a recipient on emails with a query data source through Blackbaud NetCommunity, only uses the format of First Name Middle Initial Last Name.

The impact of this was seen recently when a donor asked why the recipient name an email they received from our office displayed her name incorrectly. Blackbaud NetCommunity was referencing the 'Name' field from Raiser's Edge because the data source of the email was query-based. While her name on the Bio1 tab, in the Aliases, and on the Addressee/Salutation tab was configured correctly to show Jane S. Doe, the recipient name on the email she received was Jane E. Doe because the email was referencing the 'Name' default configuration of First Name Middle Initial Last Name.

The only workaround we could determine with BB Support was to remove her middle name and replace the true middle name with her maiden name; however, this procedure violates our policies for retaining the full legal names of our alums when they were enrolled as students.

I actually have had this problem recently. RE likes to use just the middle initial even if we have the full middle name when we export the "name" field. I use name to keep from having to export first, middle, last, etc. Some people like to see the full middle name.
